Definitions Canon: A structured service used in Orthodox services consisting of nine odes. This type of service dates to the 7th century and was introduced into the Church by St. Andrew of Crete, whose Great Canon is still used during the Great Fast. Epitaphios: An icon which is painted on cloth (in Greek, Epitaphios; in Slavonic, Plaschanitsa) which depicts the dead Savior. Orthros: The matins service which proceeds the Divine Liturgy and the feast. Troparion: A short poetic hymn referring to a Feast of the day or Saint.
